Everyday Life | Eye See You

I have the most beautiful eyes in the World.

Have I ever told you the story of my eyes?

I probably did – didn’t I? I can’t remember. It’s been so long since I’ve started this blog, so many things have been talked about, many more have been left unsaid…

Anyway, it’s a good story, so I’ll just relate it (again/anyway).

It was a dreary late Summer afternoon. I was in the middle of a Self Criticising Exercise (note at this point: I used to be a Pro at breaking myself down, absolute demon I could be to myself) and I was going all-in.

I was standing in my parents’ guest room, in front of a giant mirror door of a closet I have since moved with me into my own place (and still stand in front of, more on that here and later). And that particular day, for no particular reason, I had decided to direct all of my inner misery onto my eyes.

You see, my dad has the most amazing, bright blue eyes I’ve ever seen – and I did not inherit them!

Not only did I not get the most amazing bright blue eyes ever, my sisters did!

Life is unfair ☹

My eyes, at best, are a faded shade of blue. Dirty blue, I used to call them. What’s the opposite of bright?

Dull.

The dullest blue eyes I’d ever seen were staring back at my angry face.

I was inwardly having a raging fit over it all, when I spotted something I’d never noticed before: green flecks covering both of my irises.

Well, that just did it! Now I knew who the culprit was who gave me my ugly eyes, my Mom being the only non-blue-eyed one in the family!

I turned on a crazy mad GAAAAAAAAAAAAH! and stomped downstairs to confront my mother about this crime to my humanity.

She was cleaning up something in the kitchen as I came bursting in, shouting: “MOM! I’ve got green in my eyes!! Your green!”

I was ready to start another war over this non-bright-blue matter, but fell flat when she turned around and cut me off, clasping her hands together as she exclaimed: “I KNOW! I am so happy at least one of my girls got some of my eyes!”

Even before she hugged me, I felt my anger dissipate.

My eyes are not bright blue. They’re also not bright green.

They’re a little bit of both. Mostly soft blue, with green flecks and dashes decorating both my irises.

I know, because I just checked – in front of that big mirror door I mentioned earlier.

When the light breaks one way, my eyes seem deep blue. When the sunlight illuminates me from a different angle, they seem jade green.

I stare at myself in the mirror and I see both my parents looking back.

I have the most beautiful eyes in the World.

But it took a little while (and a mother’s pride) for me to see that 💙💚
